(Galatians 3:13-14)

What are Curses?

Curses are the direct opposite of blessings. They are a release of evil wishes and pronouncements against a person, thing, group, place or event (Deuteronomy 23:1-25). They cause mischief and injury to a person, binding him/her with a spell. They are invisible barriers that keep people away from what God has in store for them. Curses do not come without a cause or reason (Proverbs 26:2); and their effects have long-lasting effects, moving from one generation to another. And unless they are broken, they will continue to operate revealing themselves through a chain of events (Genesis 49:3-4, Numbers 32:1-5, 16:1-33, Deuteronomy 27:12-26).

Sources of Curses

  1. God: Who is the most dangerous source. When God curses only He or His anointed prophet, who is led by His Spirit, can break it (Genesis 4:11-12).
  2. Any man/woman who has authority over you such as parents, spiritual leaders etc. (Genesis 49:3-4).
  3. Satan: Who can curse those under him (John 10:10).

How Curses are Acquired

  1. When a person breaks a legitimate vow (Deuteronomy 23:21, Ecclesiastes 5:4-5).
  2. Parental abuse and dishonour (Exodus 20:12).
  3. Shedding innocent human blood (like armed robbery, abortion etc.).
  4. A sinful lifestyle.

Steps to Release Yourself from a Curse

  1. Repentance from all known sins particularly evil covenants and vows.
  2. Renounce the sins of your fathers and forefathers.
  3. Accept God’s forgiveness and forgive yourself too.
  4. Forgive those who have offended you.
  5. Renounce all contacts with accursed objects and association with false religion, and destroy all evil objects in your environment.
  6. Release yourself with aggressive prayers.
